Defined, albeit loosely, as anyone below the height of 5ft 4in, you might be surprised to know that according to the Office of National Statistics the average height of women in the UK is actually 5ft3. I.e. the average woman in the UK is considered 'petite'. Maybe that explains those dragging hems/hanging cuffs...

So, despite what clothing stores may have you believe, petite women aren't actually 'other'. They're the norm. The usual. The typical. So why, then, must shopping feel like such a lucky dip for these women?

For so long petite women had to either 'hope for the best' when purchasing from regular offerings (only to begrudgingly make the predictable trek to see a seamstress for alterations), or forgo the freedom of choice offered to anyone 5ft4+ and pick from a tiny 'petite' edit often ran as an afterthought to the mainline collections.

Thankfully, several brands - the majority of which are already cult favourites such as Topshop and Boden (where you can save money on your purchase using our Boden discount codes) - have acknowledged and tackled the problem over recent years and have upgraded (or, in some cases, introduced) their petite offerings - much to the delight of the 5ft4-and-under crowd.

While Rafaella carries regular, petite and plus-size clothing, the site has a particularly good petite selection. The Ella by Rafaella collection has cute and comfortable workwear that will take you from the office to happy hour and back. I particularly love this dropped waist dress that will actually hit at the right length.

Of course, shopping as a petite woman can have its fair share of challenges. You want to make sure seams and details fall in the right places on your frame. Also having to tailor ready-to-wear clothes to get the proper fit can no doubt get a bit expensive. But alas, so many of my favorite brands have launched and/or expanded their petite-friendly lines and I am here for it!

One of my favorite things about ASOS is that they do such a great job organizing their product on their website. The filters they offer for shopping include everything from brand, size, price, and color. But you can also filter by recycled, category, product type, and even sale/season. So once you click on the petites section, you can refine your search even more!

For their petite section, Madewell focuses mostly on jeans/pants and dresses. Their petite jeans are always a favorite of mine because they fit so dang perfectly. Not only is the length (I never need to cut my Madewell jeans!) but the fabric and feel are so comfortable without stretching out by the end of the day.

But their clothing line is so much more than stuffing corporate looks. And that includes their petite clothes. Romantic blouses, floral print maxi dresses, and stylish jackets that can fit all petite women at the perfect spot on the shoulders, waist, and hemline. Because remember, the petite fit is about more than just length, clothing should fit your entire frame properly.

Another high street hero saved by the Boohoo group in recent years, Karen Millen now has a strong online presence and a dedicated petite section to boot. We love its premium tailored pieces, form-fitting dresses and luxe leathers.

Friday Petite claims to have the best petite clothing all in one place, and currently boasts an edit of everything from M&S and Asos to independent brands like LacunaFit, a great sportswear brand for petites.

Shopping petite doesn't have to mean forgoing sustainable brands and practices. New vintage destinations dedicated to curating petite styles are popping up, just like Offbeat Petite. Founder Kate Dooley always takes a tape measure with her when sourcing pieces to ensure they work for her customers shorter frames, as well as including full measurement details on-site to help you find the perfect piece.

Another petite focused vintage brand selling everything from retro shirts and dresses to reworked sportswear pieces that have been redesigned to extend their lifetime and work for petite frames. All measurements are included along with a detailed description of how they take them, so you can guarantee the items on your wishlist will work for you.

Anyone who is less than 5 feet 4 inches tall is considered petite. However, petite clothing is about more than just your height. For instance, sleeve lengths can range from half an inch to about two and a half inches shorter than average or tall-sized clothing. Your inseam may also be about 3 to 6 inches less than those of an average-height person. While many clothing options don't cater to your needs, we do.

Gone are the days when you look at a pair of pants and find the bottoms dragging on the ground when you walk. Our selection of petite pants features shorter inseams, cropped lengths, and raised waistlines. All of your favorite denim cuts and smart dress pants should sit exactly where you need them for flawless style.Find ankle-grazing skinny jeans, cropped pants, and even jeggings that you will be excited to add to your wardrobe rotation.

If you want something that holds you in, our So Slimming petite jeans are made from our signature power-stretch fabric and have hidden tummy support. Those who like to travel in style will be interested in our Travelers pants that feature wrinkle-resistant fabrics that make looking good on the go a breeze.

Pair our meticulously tailored pants with women's petite tops like a classic white blouse for a smart workplace look or embellished styles that add a touch of feminine elegance to any outfit. For an effortless outfit you can throw on and go, browse our women's petite dresses and skirts that include maxi dresses in luxurious fabrics that move with you.

Petite clothing sizes use a similar numerical system as the average or tall women's clothing size system. They're usually marked with a "P" next to the size number to differentiate them from average or tall sizes. Our petite clothing styles typically go up to 18P (XL).
