What is loterias and how to play it

Loteria (Spanish word for "lottery") is a game of chance that involves drawing cards from a deck and matching them with images on a board. Each card has a name and a number, but the number is usually ignored. Each player has at least one board (also called a tabla), which has a 4x4 grid of 16 different images. The images vary depending on the type of loteria, but they usually represent aspects of Mexican or Spanish culture, such as animals, objects, characters, or symbols.

To start the game, one person is designated as the caller (cantor), who shuffles the deck and draws one card at a time. The caller announces the name of the card to the players, sometimes using a riddle or a verse instead of the name. For example, the caller could say "The one who covers everything" (El que todo lo tapa) instead of "The umbrella" (El paraguas). Each player looks for the corresponding image on their board and marks it with a token or a marker. In Mexico, it is traditional to use small rocks, bottle caps, or beans as tokens.

The winner is the first player who completes a row, a column, a diagonal, or a pattern on their board and shouts "Loteria!" or "Buena!" The winner gets a prize, which can be money, candy, or anything else agreed upon by the players. The game can continue until all the cards are drawn or until all the players have won.

Types of loterias

Loteria has many variations depending on the country or region where it is played. Some of the most popular types of loteria are:

Lotería Nacional (Spain)

This is the oldest and most traditional type of loteria in Spain. It was created in 1763 by King Carlos III as a way to raise money for the public treasury and to support charitable causes. It consists of drawing five numbers from a series of 100,000 tickets, each with a unique number. The tickets are divided into ten fractions, called décimos, which can be bought individually or in groups. The prizes vary depending on the type of draw, but the most famous one is the Christmas Lottery (Sorteo Extraordinario de Navidad), which has been held every year since 1812 and offers the largest jackpot in the world. The Christmas Lottery is also known as El Gordo (The Fat One), because of the huge amount of money that can be won.

Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (Spain)

This is the state-owned company that operates most of the lottery games in Spain, including Lotto (Lotería Primitiva), EuroMillions, Bonoloto, El Gordo de la Primitiva, La Quiniela, and Quinigol. These games are based on choosing numbers from a range and matching them with the ones drawn by the company. The prizes depend on the number of matches and the amount of money collected from the sales. Some of these games also have special draws with higher jackpots or extra prizes. Loterías y Apuestas del Estado also sells tickets for Lotería Nacional and other regional lotteries.

Lotería de Catalunya (Spain)

This is the lottery company that operates in the autonomous region of Catalonia, offering games such as Lotto 6/49, Trio, Super 10, La Grossa, and Loto Ràpid. These games are similar to those offered by Loterías y Apuestas del Estado, but with some differences in the rules and the prizes. For example, La Grossa is a game that was created in 2013 to compete with the Christmas Lottery, offering a jackpot of 5 million euros per series. Loto Ràpid is an instant game that can be played online or at vending machines, with prizes up to 100,000 euros.

Lotería Mexicana (Mexico)

This is the traditional game of loteria that is played with cards and boards, as explained in the introduction. It is also known as Lotería Nacional para la Asistencia Pública, which is the name of the government agency that regulates and organizes it. The agency also offers other lottery games, such as Melate, Chispazo, Progol, and Tris. These games are based on choosing numbers from a range and matching them with the ones drawn by the agency. The prizes vary depending on the game and the number of matches. Lotería Mexicana is very popular among Mexicans of all ages and backgrounds, and it is often played at family gatherings, parties, or festivals.
